(244 words) Not all books from the school curriculum are pleasant to me. However, there are such masterpieces that I read. One of them is the “Hero of our time”. I especially remember the pages that tell about Taman and the adventures of Pechorin in those places.
This chapter discusses how a “wandering officer” accidentally stumbled upon a “peaceful circle of honest smugglers.” He tracked down a girl and a blind boy who, together with the Tatar, secretly carried goods along the river. To “remove” the witness, Ondine, as the narrator called her, lured Gregory into the boat by the temptation and almost drowned her. Meanwhile, the blind man stole all his valuables and handed them to Yanko. In the finals, Pechorin pushed the girl into the water and, returning, saw her and the Tatar escape, throwing a cripple to their fate. I was especially touched by the lines when the blind man asked whether they would take him with him, and Yanko rudely replied: “What do I need you with?” In such a wilderness, the sick boy just can’t get in, and it’s very disappointing for him, because he is doomed to poverty and humiliation because of the cruelty of accomplices and inappropriate intervention of Pechorin. In the same scene, we see the true face of the protagonist. Without hesitation, he admits that he does not care about the fate of the orphan, and indeed to anyone else. He remained indifferent, although he ruined the life of strangers. And to beat a woman is also below the dignity of an officer.
Thus, the chapter "Taman" is an adventure story with an interesting plot and deep message. She reveals the image of the indifferent Pechorin and shows the tragedy of a little man who is really sorry.
